Artist Biography
Nirvana
Nirvana was an American rock band that was created by singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain along with bassist Krist Novoselic in 1987, in Aberdeen, Washington. Dave Grohl, who joined the band in 1990, is the long-lasting drummer. (prior, the band went through a series of other drummers).
The band released its first album Bleach for the Sub Pop in 1989, launching themselves as part of the Seattle music scene. After connecting to major label DGC Records, Nirvana found startling success of "Smells Like Teen Spirit", the band's foremost single from their second album Nevermind (1991), which was also their biggest hit.
Through late 1991, they traveled around Europe. It was then, the band found that the shows were precariously oversold and that "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was almost all-pervading on radio and music television. The album had also peaked the catalogs in numerous countries globally. The month when the album-‘Nevermind’ reached number one, Billboard stated publicly, "Nirvana is that rare band that has everything: critical acclaim, industry respect, pop radio appeal, and a rock-solid college/alternative base."
In 1992, Nirvana performed one of its best-known concerts, headlining at the Reading Festival in England which was followed by their third and final album-‘In Utero’, which was released in 1993, andentered the Billboard 200 chart at number one and obtained significant approval as a drastic departure from Nevermind. Recording Industry Association of America has been licensed the record five times platinum and it has traded over four million copies in the United States alone.
At the end of 1993, Nirvana filmed a chapter of the popular Unplugged series on MTV which displayed bands performing aural versions of their songs. In the following year Nirvana was dissolved but though it was disbanded, their inheritance remains safe with the band’s greatest hits still a staple of rock radio. Grohl, Novoselic and Cobain’s widow Courtney Love have later released live albums and collections, which included greatest-hits package and set of uncommon tracks.
Nirvana, from the time of their entrance has sold over twenty-five million albums in the US alone and over fifty million worldwide. In 2002, ‘You Know You Are Right’, an incomplete demo from the band's final recording session, topped radio playlists all around the world. The band acquired number of awards in their debut year, 1992. They received the Best Alternative Video award for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Best New Artist from the MTV Video Music Awards in the same year . In 1996, they also obtained, The Best Alternative Music Performance award for MTV Unplugged in New York.
