Lyrics of "A Change Is Gonna Come"

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh and just like the river I been a running ever since
It's been a long, a long time coming but I know
A change gonna come oh yes it will
It's been too hard living but I'm afraid to die
Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky
It's been a long, a long time coming but I know
A change gonna come oh yes it will

I go to the movie, and I go downtown
Somebody keep telling me "don't hang around"
It's been a long, a long time coming, but i know
A change gonna come oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
And I say "brother, help me please"
But he winds up knocking me
Back down on my knees
There been times that I thought I wouldn't last for long
Now think I'm able to carry on
It's been a long, along time coming but I know
A change gonna come, oh yes it will

Artist Biography

Sam Cooke

Sam Cooke was an American singer, songwriter and an industrialist. He intermingled sensuality and spirituality, style and soul, movie-idol gazes and gospel-singer dignity. His warm, confessional tone of voice won him a dedicated gospel following as lead singer for the Soul Stirrers.

Cooke’s career was identified by his early hold of gospel and his subsequent move into the world of pop music and rhythm & blues. Initially, he became eminent as a lead vocalist with the Highway QC’s. In 1956 he released his first pop single, "Lovable" (1956). Cooke's unique and distinctive vocals were easily recognized at that time when here was an extensive disgrace against gospel singers performing worldly music. Later on in 1957, he signed with Keen Records. His first release after that was “You Send Me,” which was sent to the top of the pop and R&B charts.

In 1961, Cooke started his own record label, SAR Records and then left Keen to sign with RCA Victor. One of his hits after he signed was “Chain Gang”, which reached #2 on U.S chart chased by other hits like, "Sad Mood", "Bring it on Home to Me", "Another Saturday Night" and "Twistin' the Night Away". He later focused on the singles and he had twenty-nine top-40 hits on the pop charts, and even more on the R&B charts. He released album- ‘Night Beat’ in 1963 and the most approved studio album “Ain't That Good News” in 1964 which was the final album to be released within Cooke's lifetime. The album is most excellent for Cooke's most famous and signature song, "A Change Is Gonna Come" which peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Black Singles chart, and topped several local playlists.

Cooke was posthumously honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, and in 2004 Rolling Stone positioned him #16 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".In 2008, Cooke was named the fourth "Greatest Singer of All Time" by Rolling Stone.
